Widow allegedly beaten, harassed inside her home in Betagi

A widow was allegedly beaten and harassed after an intruder forced his way into her home in Betagi upazila of Barguna. The victim, Mst. Ruma Begum (45), has filed a formal complaint at the Betagi Police Station in connection with the incident.
According to the complaint and local sources, Sultan Hossain from Jhopkhali village in Hossnabad union had repeatedly propositioned and proposed marriage to Ruma Begum, the widow of the late Lablu from the same neighborhood. Enraged by her consistent refusals, Sultan reportedly forced his way into her homestead on Saturday, unleashing a stream of verbal abuse.
When Ruma Begum protested, Sultan and his accomplices attacked her with sticks, beating her indiscriminately and leaving injuries across her body.
As the victim's cries drew neighbors to the scene, the attackers fled while issuing death threats. Local residents rescued her and rushed her to the Betagi Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Victim Ruma Begum stated that Sultan and his associates have harassed her in various ways for a long time. She recounted that on the day of the incident, they broke into her home, subjected her to physical assault, and attempted to humiliate her severely, demanding a fair trial and security to live safely.
Betagi Police Station OC Md. Harun-Or-Rashid Howlader confirmed that a written complaint has been received. He stated that the matter is being investigated with utmost seriousness and legal action will be taken.
