Umbrellas, fans, essentials distributed to Rajshahi traffic police amid scorching heat
Rajshahi Bureau
In response to the intense heatwave, the Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) distributed umbrellas, hand fans, water bottles, and oral rehydration salts to its traffic police personnel on duty at 10:30 AM on Monday at the RMP headquarters, aimed at providing relief to officers working in extreme heat. The ceremony was attended by RMP Police Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian and Rajshahi Range DIG Mohammad Shahjahan, PPM (Bar), PhD.
The initiative was implemented through a collaboration between RMP and Start Fund Bangladesh under the ESDO-Heatwave Emergency Action and Transformation Project.
Speaking at the event, DIG Mohammad Shahjahan said, “The hardships faced by our traffic police in this intense heat are well-known. Regardless of adverse weather conditions, they ensure safe mobility for citizens on the roads. Today’s distribution of cooling essentials is a significant step to alleviate their struggles.” He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the ESDO Heatwave Project and Start Fund Bangladesh for their support.
Police Commissioner Mohammad Abu Sufian added, “In Rajshahi’s scorching heat, our traffic police stand in the sun for hours, risking their health to serve the public. Prolonged exposure to heat increases the risk of heatstroke, dehydration, skin issues, and even heart conditions. Umbrellas, purified water bottles, hand fans, and oral rehydration salts are essential protective tools for them at this moment.”
Representatives from ESDO and Start Fund Bangladesh stated that such support programs will continue in heatwave-affected areas to prioritize the safety of frontline workers, ensuring uninterrupted services for city residents.
RMP Additional Police Commissioner (Crime) Nazmul Hasan, PPM, Deputy Police Commissioner (Traffic) Md. Nur Alam Siddiqui, senior RMP officials, and ESDO Project Manager Md. Mahbubul Haque, along with other relevant personnel were present.
