Two suspected robbers killed in Shariatpur lynch-mob attack

Two suspected robbers were killed and five others injured in a lynch-mob attack in Angaria of Sadar upazila of Shariatpur district on Friday night.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed.

During the incident, four people sustained bullet injuries in a robbery attempt. They were identified as Tota Mia (35), son of Dalil Uddin from Shariatpur; Masum Mia (30), a bulkhead worker and son of Joynal Mia; and Alamin (19), another bulkhead worker and son of Anis Fakir from Pirojpur.

According to locals, a group of robbers arrived in a speedboat and attempted to enter the Angaria area around 10 pm.

Helal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Palong Police Station, said that upon sensing their presence, locals tried to stop them. At one point, the robbers opened fire, injuring four people.

Dr Muntasir, the duty doctor at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, confirmed that the four injured individuals were brought to the hospital. Two were later transferred to Dhaka, while one remains under treatment and another received first aid.

Meanwhile, locals managed to capture eight of the robbers as they tried to flee and subjected them to a severe beating.

Mitu Akter, resident medical officer of Sadar Hospital, stated that eight suspected robbers were brought to the hospital around 1 am, two of whom were declared dead.

The five other injured robbers have been sent to Dhaka for treatment.

Legal action is being taken against the robbers, the OC added.
