Two prisoners died mysteriously in separate incidents in two prisons in Gazipur. The DIG Prisons has formed a three-member investigation committee into the incident. One of them died in the Gazipur District Jail and the other died in Kashimpur Central Jail Part-1.

The prisoners, Omar Farak (33) died in the Gazipur District Jail and Dulal Uddin (52) died in Kashimpur Central Jail Part-1.

Omar Farak is the son of Alamgir Hossain of Bir Ujjali village in Toka Union of Kapasia Upazila of the district. He was sentenced to two years in a case filed by Kapasia Police Station in 2019 and is also an accused in a case of assaulting a prison officer inside the prison recently. Dulal Uddin, a prisoner in Part-1 of Kashimpur Central Jail, is the son of Mohin Uddin of Kenduab village in the same upazila. He is a life-sentenced convict in a murder case of Kapasia police station.

Gazipur District Jail Superintendent Rafiqul Quader said that Omar Faruk attempted suicide by hanging himself in his cell at around 2:30 am on Monday (February 10). When the matter came to the attention of the prison guards, they gave him first aid inside the prison. When the situation deteriorated, he was taken to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital in a life-threatening condition, where the doctor on duty declared him dead. The doctor mentioned broad death in his death certificate. The DIG Prison has formed a three-member investigation committee into the incident. The other two members, headed by Jail Superintendent Al Mamun of Kashimpur Central Jail Part-2, are Ibrahim, Deputy Jailer of Kashimpur High Security Central Jail, and Sarbombat Dewan, Jailer of Kishoreganj Jail.

Tariqul Islam, Jailer of Kashimpur Central Jail Part-1, said that prisoner Dulal Mia is a life-sentenced prisoner in a murder case of Kapasia Police Station. He was suffering from cancer. He was taken to Dhaka several times for treatment. He last visited this prison on February 18. He felt chest pain around 11 pm on Monday and was taken to Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
