Training on climate empowerment held in Barguna

Waliullah Emran, Barguna

Climate change is no longer a fear of the future. It has already begun to manifest more frequently and intensely. Whether it is floods, cyclones, or severe heatwaves—each of these impacts affects the younger generation the most. Yet, their representation in global discussions remains inadequate. Against this backdrop, an event titled ‘Training on Climate Empowerment and Youth Action Barguna’ was organized with the youth of Barguna, who are on the frontlines of climate change.

This day-long training was held at the Barguna Press Club auditorium, organized by Durbar Youth Network and Greenpeace Youth Development Society on Friday.

The event began at 9 AM with an inaugural speech by Md. Abu Zafar Saleh, General Secretary of the Barguna Press Club.

Co-organizers of the event included Barguna Youth Hub for Climate Empowerment, Science and Education Youth Foundation (SAFE), Coastal Surjo Social Organization (USSOS), Bangladesh Youth Cultural Organization, Sonar Bangla Youth Club, and MS Design. Nearly 70 youth participants from Barguna and various coastal areas took part in the training.

Organizers stated that the main objective of this training was to encourage youth to work for climate justice, build their capacity to lead environmental protection initiatives, and engage them in climate action.

Participants were offered opportunities to gain in-depth knowledge about climate change and the environment, develop leadership and strategic skills, prepare and implement practical action plans, form networks with experienced organizers, and engage in discussions. Certificates were distributed among the participants, and saplings were handed out to promote tree planting for climate justice.

The organizers emphasized that as a coastal district, Barguna is vulnerable to climate change. If the local youth can be made aware and organized, the movement to protect the environment will gain momentum.

Through this initiative, local environmental and development organizations believe that the youth of Barguna are no longer just victims of the climate crisis—they are now emerging as driving forces of change.
