A court in Habiganj today (Sep 19) acquitted BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman in a defamation case filed against him in the district.

Judge Abdul Alim of Habiganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Court gave this order on Thursday.

Court inspector Nandan Kanti Dhar stated that the judge also ordered the officer-in-charge (OC) of Gulshan police station to return the arrest warrant previously issued against Tarique Rahman in connection with this case.

The case was filed by Asaduzzaman Khan Tuhin, a former vice-president of the Habiganj district Chhatra League in 2015, following comments made by Tarique Rahman about Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in an interview with an English newspaper.

According to court clerk Tajur Islam, the plaintiff had not appeared before the court since 2018 and failed to submit the necessary documentation over a six-year period. As a result, the judge dismissed the case under Section 204 (3) of the Criminal Procedure Code, leading to the acquittal of Tarique Rahman.
