Tanjila Khanam appointed new CEO of GCC

Md. Mujibur Rahman Patwary, Gazipur

Senior administration cadre official Tanjila Khanam has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC).

The Ministry of Public Administration confirmed the placement through an official gazette notification, a move widely viewed by urban stakeholders as a positive step toward streamlining governance in one of the country’s largest and fastest-growing municipal administrations.

According to the notification issued on June 1 by the Deputation-2 Sector of the Public Administration Ministry, Tanjila Khanam, who was serving as a Joint Secretary under the Secondary and Higher Education Division, has been transferred to the Local Government Division for her placement as the GCC Chief Executive Officer. The order, signed by Deputy Secretary Mohammad Nur-e-Alam, directed the immediate execution of the posting in the public interest.

Administrative sources confirmed that Khanam will formally assume her new office on June 4. As an experienced civil servant, she has held various portfolios across multiple government departments and ministries throughout her career. Senior officials noted that her strong track record in administrative efficiency, policy formulation, and institutional coordination driven at the macro level led to her selection to pilot the critical urban administration.

Gazipur stands as one of the nation's premier industrial and highly populated urban zones. Positioned adjacent to the capital, Dhaka, the city faces an ever-increasing demand for civic amenities due to the influx of millions of residents and daily commuters. Consequently, the role of the CEO remains pivotal in executing multi-dimensional urban challenges, including infrastructure expansion, drainage modernization, waste management, revenue collection, public health, environmental conservation, and waterlogging mitigation.

Urban planning experts emphasize that the CEO acts as the bureaucratic linchpin of a city corporation, bridging the gap between elected representatives and administrative execution. The office is responsible for keeping the municipal machinery active, streamlining development projects, and ensuring the transparent delivery of utility services to the citizens.

In recent years, rapid industrialization and population growth have strained Gazipur’s civic infrastructure, making traffic congestion, waste disposal, and ecological imbalance top priorities for local residents. Urban planners suggest that transforming Gazipur into a sustainable, tech-driven habitat requires strict accountability and innovative leadership—qualities local stakeholders expect the new CEO to bring to the table to accelerate the city's ongoing development roadmap.
