State Minister Faridul calls for global coop to build habitable planet for current, future generations

Staff Correspondent

Sheikh Faridul Islam, State Minister for the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has urged the member states of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to work collectively to build a safe, sustainable, and habitable planet for both current and future generations.

The State Minister made this call on Friday, while addressing the second-day session of the high-level GEF Assembly held in the historic city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

In his address, the State Minister emphasized that environmental pollution could be drastically reduced across the globe if its root sources are accurately identified and mitigated through coordinated international initiatives.

Highlighting Bangladesh's domestic environmental milestones, the State Minister revealed that as part of implementing the government’s core electoral pledges, the country is actively working on massive sustainable agendas over the next five years. This comprehensive green roadmap includes planting 250 million trees across the country, re-excavating 20,000 kilometers of degraded rivers and canals, producing 10,000 megawatts of clean solar energy, and establishing utility-scale waste-to-energy power plants. He added that the government is simultaneously prioritizing Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA) mechanisms to safeguard its vulnerable coastal and riparian landscapes.

The high-profile GEF Assembly in Samarkand has brought together official delegates, environmental ministers, and policy diplomats from 186 member countries.
