Repairing of flood damaged roads in Sylhet to start soon

Sylhet Bureau

In the month of June-July this year, there was a terrible flood in the Sylhet Division. The flood caused extensive damage to roads in all the districts of the division. Vehicles are moving on the affected roads at great risk.

Accidents are occurring regularly due to the condition of the roads. Due to the formation of ditches in many places, rainwater is accumulating there. As a result, common people are suffering.

Recently, a project of Tk 635 crore has been approved for the repair of 31 such roads under the Sylhet road and highway department.

With the end of the tender process, work will begin within the next two months and all road repairs will be completed by 2023. As a result, road suffering is going to end soon.

According to the sources of the Roads and Highways Department, after the flood ended, the Roads and Highways Sylhet Zone sent a report to the Chief Engineer of the Roads and Highways Directorate showing the overall picture of the flood-damaged roads. In view of this, a project of Tk 635 crore was approved to repair 31 roads of the division.

Most of the roads of Sylhet were submerged in flood water due to this terrible flood. Water flowed from 2 to 5 feet on the roads at various places. Especially the roads of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts are more damaged. The bitumen in various parts of the road has been swept away by the flood.

In some places, the soil on the edge of the road has collapsed. Approach roads to various bridges and culverts were also damaged.

Md Mostafizur Rahman, Executive Engineer of Roads and Highways Department, Sylhet, said that a project worth Tk 635 crore has been approved to repair 31 roads in the division. The tender process is already at an end.

The repair of the road will begin within the next two months. The working time is fixed according to the length of the road. In that case, some roads may take six to one year to repair. All the roads in the division will be brought back to their previous position before next year's monsoon. This official commented that these roads will be more beautiful than before when the project is completed.

Mostafizur Rahman also said that since there are frequent floods in Sylhet, development projects are being taken up in some places and that process is also going on.

Long-term planning is also being done on how to strengthen the roads that are most affected by floods.
