Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Monday stressed the need for presenting the true and impartial history of Bangladesh’s Liberation War through the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs’ future activities.
He directed all concerned to work so that the real history of the Liberation War emerges through all the projects of the Liberation War Affairs Ministry in the coming days.
The directive came during a meeting held at the State Guest House Jamuna, attended by Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk E Azam, Principal Secretary to the Chief Adviser Siraz Uddin Miah and other senior ministry officials.
Prof Yunus called for the immediate appointment of a consultant and formation of a committee to assess how properties under the Bangladesh Freedom Fighters Welfare Trust can be better utilised and strengthened.
“Effective initiatives must be taken to revive the Welfare Trust and we need to identify what enterprises can be developed using its properties to enhance its capacity,” he said.
During the meeting, Adviser Azam talked about a confusing representation of Liberation War history.
He claimed that expensive infrastructure projects under the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs have failed to accurately depict key historical elements, such as battlefields or the role of freedom fighters.
“Instead, these sites have displayed exaggerated information centered around a single family, using images and equipment with no detailed historical context,” he alleged.
The Adviser cited the example of a Tk 23-crore project titled Implementation of Bangabandhu’s Ideology and the Spirit of the Liberation War, claiming that despite receiving substantial funds, no actual research had been carried out.
Adviser Azam alleged that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina politicised the Freedom Fighters’ cause, turning them into a partisan group and using ministry infrastructure and funding for Awami League activities.
“The properties under the Welfare Trust remain unprotected, yet they are valuable national assets. A clear decision must be made regarding their future,” he added.
During the meeting, ministry officials also presented a summary of major initiatives undertaken during the current government’s tenure, along with a work plan for the next six months.
