‘Regrettable and brutal’: Home Adviser about Mitford murder

Staff Correspondent

Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Saturday described the murder of scrap metal trader Lal Chand Sohag in front of Mitford Hospital in the capital as brutal and very regrettable.

He made the remark while speaking to reporters after attending a special police welfare meeting at Mill Barrack in Old Dhaka.

Responding to a question about the murder and mob violence, the adviser said, “The murder that took place in Dhaka is very unfortunate. So far, five people have already been brought under the law in connection with the incident.”

Among them, two were arrested by RAB and two by DMP personnel. Later, another person was also arrested, he added.

The Home Adviser said detectives are actively working to identify and arrest the remaining suspects. “We’ve become somewhat intolerant. Even minor incidents are escalating into violent clashes. Everyone must come forward to stop this tendency,” he lamented.

“Those involved in similar incidents in Chandpur, Khulna, and Chattogram have already been brought to justice. We take immediate action whenever such incidents occur,” said the adviser.

Regarding his visit to the police facilities at Mill Barrack, he said, “The purpose of the visit is to talk to them, assess their living and food conditions. We also plan to arrange a training program here to ensure the upcoming national election is held peacefully.”

The adviser also mentioned that preparations for the next general election are expected to be completed by December. “We don’t know the exact date of the election—that will be announced by the Election Commission,” he added.
