Poison fishing, deer poaching in Sundarbans: 76 arrested, 53 trawlers seized in two months

 S. M. Saiful Islam Kabir, Sundarbans

In the world's largest mangrove forest and fish-rich area, the Sundarbans of the southwestern region, forest guards are conducting extensive drives.

Despite these operations, illegal poison fishing continues unabated. In the ongoing drives over the past two months, 76 people have been arrested, 42 kg of venison recovered, along with poisoned shrimp and numerous deer traps. During this time, 53 trawlers and boats were seized, and 42 cases were filed.

According to the forest department, a crackdown has been ongoing for the past two months in the Sharankhola and Chandpai ranges of the Sundarbans to prevent deer poaching and forest product smuggling. In these drives, a record number of nylon traps for catching deer and poisoned shrimp have been recovered.

The highest amount of shrimp was seized last Thursday . On that day, forest guards detained six dinghy boats at Bara Bosta canal of the Jongra patrol post in the Sundarbans. From the seized boats, three maunds of poisoned shrimp and five bottles of pesticide were recovered. In May and June, 86 special drives were conducted in Sharankhola and Chandpai ranges. In these drives, 42 cases were filed against 76 accused. From different parts of the Sundarbans, 42 kg of venison including three deer heads were recovered, along with 2,065 deer traps.

A total of 445 kg of poisoned shrimp, 53 boats and trawlers, and 532 banned crab-catching traps were also seized. Currently, there is a three-month ban on entering the Sundarbans and fishing. Despite this, a section of fishermen is sneaking into the Sundarbans under the cover of darkness and applying pesticides in canals to catch fish.

Md. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the East Sundarbans Forest Division in Bagerhat, said that the two-month-long extensive drive has significantly curbed deer poaching in the Sundarbans. Some dishonest individuals are still attempting to catch fish using pesticides by deceiving the forest department.

The DFO stated that forest guards have been instructed to intensify operations to catch these offenders.
