Over 230,000 animals ready : Eid-ul-Azha cattle markets thrive in Lalmonirhat

 Lavlu Sheikh, Lalmonirhat

As Eid-ul-Azha approaches, the cattle markets in Lalmonirhat are bustling with activity, with over 230,000 animals prepared for sacrifice. Medium-sized cattle dominate the supply.

The traditional Barobari Haat, along with other markets like Durakuti, Nawaber Haat (BDR Haat), Nayarhat, Shialkhoa, Chaparhat, Doikhawa, and Hatibandha’s Barokhata, are vibrant with the influx of cattle, goats, buffaloes, and sheep. Local administration and farmers are optimistic that, after meeting local demand, surplus animals can be supplied to other parts of Bangladesh.

A visit to Barobari Haat revealed a lively atmosphere, with local cattle dominating and sellers actively calling out to attract buyers. By 8 a.m., the market was packed, with cattle prices ranging from 60,000 to 300,000 BDT. Buyers, however, are primarily drawn to medium-sized cattle, and the crowd is increasing as people aim to purchase early.

Buyer Abul Hossain noted, “Prices are high closer to Eid, so I bought a cow today for 75,000 BDT, though brokers caused some hassle.” Md. Sabur Ali, another buyer, said, “Seven of us pooled together to buy a cow for 70,000 BDT, which was cost-effective.” Milan Mia, who purchased a goat, said, “I got a khasi for 10,000 BDT; the supply of goats is good.”

Medium-sized cattle are selling more than larger ones. Farmer Yunus Ali from Kurigram’s Phulbari brought five cattle, selling four medium-sized ones but not the larger one. Haydar Ali from Panchagram Union observed, “There’s still time before Eid, but prices seem slightly high.” Farmer Alamgir Islam from Barobari Union brought three 10-12 mound cattle, expecting to sell them for 260,000–270,000 BDT each, but buyers are offering lower prices.

Farmers report rising feed and production costs but insufficient price increases. Afsar Mia from Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila said, “Costs have risen significantly compared to last year, but prices haven’t increased much.”

Security and health measures are prioritized, with fake note detectors, police patrols, and medical teams ensuring no unhealthy animals enter the markets. District Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam stated, “Most farmers have used natural methods to fatten cattle, reducing hormone or injection use. Medical teams ensure no sick animals are brought to the markets.” He confirmed that approximately 230,000 animals are ready across Lalmonirhat’s five upazilas, with surplus cattle expected to be supplied to other districts after meeting local demand.
