In a joint operation by the administration at Meghula Bazar in Dohar upazila of Dhaka, a huge quantity of banned current nets (commonly known as China Dhoair) was seized. The seized illegal nets measure 116.6 million meters in length, with a market value of Tk 40.8 million.
According to the upazila administration, the seized banned nets were burned and destroyed on the orders of the mobile court.
The operation was led by a special team of the Bangladesh Army deployed in Dohar under Lieutenant Tanjimul Islam, along with Dohar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Tasfiq Sibgat Ullah, Upazila Fisheries Officer Mosammat Lutfun Nahar, and Dohar Police.
At 4 PM on Monday, a combined raid was conducted at two factories and eight warehouses used for making illegal current nets and China Dhoair nets inside a four-storied building in Meghula Bazar on the banks of the Padma River. During the raid, around 116.6 million meters of banned nets, worth Tk 40.8 million, were recovered from the warehouses. Later, the seized nets were taken away in three trucks to Moinot Ghat and burned in the evening.
Additionally, the iron rods used in the nets were auctioned for Tk 98,000, which will be donated to various orphanages, said Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Tasfiq Sibgat Ullah.
Regarding the matter, AC (Land) Tasfiq Sibgat Ullah said, two illegal net-making factories and eight warehouses in Meghula Bazar were raided. Around 116.6 million meters of banned China nets, worth approximately Tk 40.8 million, were seized. Later, the nets were destroyed by burning them on the banks of the Padma at Moinot Ghat. The iron rods used in the nets were sold for Tk 98,000, and the money will be donated to different orphanages. Such operations will continue, he added.
Dohar UNO Tania Tabassum said, for a long time, fishing with such nets has been destroying the country’s fish resources. Due to large-scale drives against current nets, their use has reduced. But the China Dhoair is a new technology. Its use destroys everything from fish eggs to fries. Such nets are banned. To protect the country’s fish resources, drives like this will continue.
