Staff Correspondent
The country’s onion market has become unstable suddenly after India extended restrictions on the outbound shipments of onions until 31 March 2024.
The onion prices in the wholesale market have increased by Tk 60-70 per kg in the last two days since Thursday.
The wholesale price of Indian onion was 150-170 at Shyambazar in Old Dhaka on Saturday while it was Tk 90-100 on Thursday, according to the wholesale traders.
“The local onion supply is nearly depleted, and simultaneously, the cost of imported onions has risen,” Haji Abdul Majed, Organising Secretary of Shyambazar Krishipanya Arot Malik Samitee, told this Correspondent.
The wholesale price hike of the onion has started impacting the price in the retail markets in the capital.
In Dhaka’s Mirpur-12 kitchen market, each kilogram of the local varieties of onion was being sold at Tk180-200 while the Indian onions were being sold at Tk150-160 per kilogram.
The price has also been increased in Karwanbazar and other kitchen markets in the capital.
