Naogaon-2 constituency : 'How Jamaat won by defeating BNP candidate'

Ikhtiar Uddin Azad, Patnitala (Naogaon)

47. In Naogaon 2 (Dhamirhat-Patnitala) constituency, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami nominee and 10-party alliance candidate with the scale symbol Md. Enamul Haque has been elected unofficially. He received 141,526 votes. His nearest rival, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) nominated MP candidate Md. Shamsujoha Khan received 134,533 votes.

It is learned that Md. Enamul Haque won by 6,993 votes.

On February 12, 286,070 voters exercised their franchise in this constituency from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. The casting vote rate in this constituency is about 77 percent.

On the other hand, Eagle Marker candidate Md. Motibul Islam, nominated by Amar Bangladesh Party, received 2,580 votes. The number of invalid or spoiled votes in this seat was 7,431 votes.

It is worth noting that 1,723 voters from within and outside the country exercised their voting rights through postal ballots.

Winning candidate Md. Enamul Haque expressed gratitude to the Creator for reflecting the people's will through free, fair, impartial and peaceful elections and thanked the voters of Dhamairhat and Patnitala. He also called on everyone to remain calm.

Former Vice Chairman of Patnitala Upazila Parishad and Naogaon District Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Md. Habibur Rahman expressed satisfaction that Jamaat-e-Islami won the Naogaon-2 constituency for the first time in the 54-year history of independence through this election.

The investigation of the BNP's results in this constituency, which was once identified as a BNP stronghold, revealed that "BNP's candidate selection, internal conflicts among party leaders, a spirit of revenge, the influence of leaders' misdeeds, negative publicity with each other through social media, and the expulsion of some BNP leaders from the party just before the last election have led to BNP supporters emotionally sealing the ballot box to defeat the BNP candidate."

In addition to the above-mentioned important reasons, local conscious civil society has stated that after the August 5th uprising, the BNP candidate's supported leaders and activists exercised their voting rights in accordance with the provisions of Islam as a trust of ordinary voters, considering their record.
