MPs elected to 50 seats reserved for women in 12th Parliament take oath

Staff Correspondent

Members of Parliament elected to the 50 seats reserved for women in the 12th National Parliament took oath on Wednesday.

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered the oath in the oath-taking room of the Sangsad Bhaban around 3:40 pm.

Prime Minister and Leader of Parliament Sheikh Hasina attended the swearing-in ceremony.

Speaker first administered oath to 48 lawmakers elected from the ruling Awami League. After that, the two elected from the Jatiya Party were sworn in separately. After taking the oath, the newly elected MPs signed the oath book according to the custom.

With the support of a 14-party alliance and 62 independent MPs, the Awami League got 48 seats and the Jatiya Party got 2 seats. Reserved seats are distributed proportionally to the number of seats obtained by parties or coalitions in direct elections.

The Election Commission published the gazette with the names and addresses of these MPs of the women constituencies on Tuesday.

The polling date for this election was scheduled for 14 March. But there was no need for a vote as there was no counter-candidate.
