Ministers, mayor, and other top officials of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) were greatly annoyed by the mosquito biting as they inspected cleanliness work along a canal in Uttara area of Dhaka on Wednesday.

Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tajul Islam, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam, along with other top officials of the city corporation, went to inspect the cleanliness work of a canal in Sector No. 12 this noon.

At that time, the minister, mayor and other guests were heavily bitten by mosquitoes and some of them were seen to flee the spot hastily in the face of the mosquito bite, said an official of the DNCC who was present at the spot.

During the cleanliness programme, Tajul Islam said the city dwellers are facing an unbearable crisis as the mosquito menace took an acute turn here.

“We are all deeply concerned about the Aedes mosquito, as its bites can lead to fatal outcomes for the patients,” he said, adding that all public hospitals have already been equipped with the necessary equipment to deal with the issue.

Mayor Atiqul Islam said people will have to come forward out of their social responsibilities from their respective positions to effectively combat the menace of the Aedes mosquito.

Claiming that the DNCC is taking action in the hotspot areas, he said, “We will have to wage a social movement to protect our lives from the adverse impact of the mosquito. Social opinion leaders will have to hold discussions with common people within their vicinities to ensure the cleanliness of their respective areas.”
