Mighty Brahmaputra now a dead river

Due to the dryness of the water, the Kalaghari mighty Brahmaputra river has now turned into a sandy land.

The call of the water flow during the monsoon is no more. It looks like a small canal. Dhudhu shelf and chars all around. Many places have now turned into arable land.

The navigability crisis has also occurred in the Mul river. As the speed of the river is narrowed, ferries and boats are often stuck in the ferry in the navigability crisis. Mominul Islam, a traditional Jorgach Hat businessman built on the banks of the Brahmaputra river, said that three of the upazilas of the upazila (Chilmari, Nayarhat and Ashtamirchar Union) were divided by the Brahmaputra river. More than half a million people of the union have to come to the jorgadha hut two days a week to sell their products. Due to lack of navigability in the river, they have to come to Jodhgach Hut to make their market in a very difficult way.

Oil trader Farhad Ali said the rent of a drum oil was Tk 20 before bringing the boat to the grazing area. Due to the drying of the river water, the cost of transporting a drum fuel oil to the boat is currently Tk.

As the navigability of the river is reduced, the ferry and boat are being overcome from Chilmari to Raumari and Rajibpur for more than twice. This has increased both the time and the financial cost of the passengers. More than 2,000 fishermen used to live in the area along the banks of the river Brahmaputra. Due to the dryness of the river, they are living a better life with family members because they are unable to catch fish.

Many people, including Sukumar Roy, said that the Brahmaputra river is now dead river. There are no fish here. Fish of 20-5 rupees are not available throughout the day. So the families in the jail are in great trouble. Due to lack of fish, many people leave the profession in different cities of the country, some are working in the shop, some are working to cut the soil. There is no water in the river and it does not understand the stomach and eat every day. We have to borrow and bank loans to eat in the stomach.

Chilmari Union Parishad Chairman Aminul Islam said, due to the dryness crisis of the water of the Brahmaputra river, there were various crises in the trading or on the way. If the Brahmaputra river was dug in a planned way, the river would have been blessed with the locals. People from all over the upazila, including the people of the country, will benefit if the navigability of the Brahmaputra river is brought back through dredging.
