JU students demand cancellation of quota system in govt jobs

JU correspondent

Jahangirnagar University students on Friday demanded the cancellation of the verdict of high court regarding reinstatement of quota system in government jobs.

Over hundred students formed a human chain at around 3:30 pm at the road adjacent to the central Shaheed Minar of the university.

Addressing the human chain, Towhid Mohammad Siyam, an undergraduate student of the International Relations department said, " The government took a harebrained decision, the freedom fighters not fight against the people of west Pakistan they fight against their discriminations in different aspects to the people of our country.

"However, similarly the government took a preferential decision to the common people of the country, we will fight as like our freedom fighters fight against the disparity," he added.

Arif Sohel, a postgraduate student of the International Relations Department said, "Today we are standing here to protest discriminatory quota system. Quota is introduced for the backward and disadvantaged people of the society but the government goes beyond this policy.

"For such discriminatory quota, our forefathers did not fight the liberation war, it was not the principle of liberation war. The student body will not accept this sort of preferential decision," he added.

Speakers at the human chain warn if their protest will continue until the demand will meet.

The function was moderated by Mahfuz Islam Megh of the Environmental Sciences department.
