The authorities of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have punished a student with a fine of Tk 1 lakh over seriously injuring a student by riding a motorbike at a reckless speed on the university campus.

An office order signed by JU Registrar Md Abu Hasan confirmed the matter on Sunday.

The decision was made in a special syndicate meeting held on December 4 under the chairmanship of JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Nurul Alam.

The punished, Ferdous Mahmood Neon, a former undergraduate student of the Philosophy department under the academic session 2015-16, was illegally staying at A F M Kamal Uddin Hall of the university.

Earlier on February 2, Neon hit recklessly on the road adjacent to Mowlana Bhashani Hall and seriously injured the victim Zahid Hasan, a fresher of the Journalism and Media Studies Department.

After the accident, the university authorities formed a probe body to investigate the matter and give an investigation report in this connection.

“The report recommended imposing a Tk 1 lakh fine to the accused Neon and also recommended suspending the issuance of the master's degree certificate until the Tk 1 lakh fine was paid to the victim,” the office order read.

“The probe body also recommended regulating the external motorcycle movement, proper inspection of driving licences and taking the initiative to adopt specific rules and regulations for motorcycle riding and parking within the university,” the office order articulated.
