Jamaat leaders from new party, apply to EC for registration

Staff Correspondent

A group of leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has formed a new political party named Bangladesh Development Party (BDP) and applied to the Election commission (EC) for registration to contest the next parliamentary elections.

Jamaat Demra thana unit ameer Anowar Hossain has been made president while Jamaat Dhaka south city unit working committee member Nijamul Haque Nayeem made general secretary of BDP, party sources said.

The BDP submitted application to the Election Commission on Wednesday for registration with the commission. A party needs to get registered with the EC for contesting parliamentary polls.

In response to questions from journalists about BDP’s affiliation with Jamaat, Anowar Hossain said, "We are a new party. We have collected members from the new generation. We don't have collaboration or affiliation with any other party.”

The High Court ordered cancellation of the Jamaat’s registration and declared the party illegal in a verdict on August 1 in 2013. Later, the EC published a gazette canceling Jamaat’s registration on October 29 in 2018.

The Jamaat-nominated candidates contested the last parliamentary elections held on December 30, in 2018, with ‘paddy sheaf’, electoral symbol of its main ally Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
