Dhaka Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanom has expressed her optimistic vision for the future of Bangladeshi football, stating, "I dream that one day world-class footballers like Messi, Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo, or Mbappe will be born in Bangladesh."
She shared these sentiments while addressing the opening ceremony of the ‘Multimedia Journalist Football Tournament-2026’ at the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) grounds on Friday.
"There is no lack of talent in our country," DC Farida Khanom said. "What we need is proper nurturing, modern training, international-standard facilities, and long-term planning. If we can ensure an enabling environment for our children and adolescents, the flag of Bangladesh will one day fly on the grandest stage of world football."
Highlighting the importance of sports beyond mere recreation, she noted that football serves as a vital teacher of discipline, leadership, responsibility, tolerance, self-confidence, and team spirit. "These lessons from the field help a person succeed in every aspect of life. Therefore, sports should not be seen merely as a competition, but as an essential medium for nation-building," she added.
Reflecting on the profession of those present, she praised the relentless efforts of journalists in delivering truthful and objective news. She remarked that the participation of journalists in a positive event like this proves that good journalism is inseparable from a healthy body and mind.
"Many talented footballers in the remote regions of the country fail to develop their skills due to a lack of opportunities," she observed. "If regular competitions, skilled coaches, modern training, and adequate playgrounds are ensured at the grassroots level, Bangladesh will produce world-shaking footballers in the future."
The Deputy Commissioner also emphasized the role of sports in protecting youth from drugs, terrorism, crime, and social decay, noting that it is essential for fostering a healthy, conscious, and humane generation. She called on families, educational institutions, sports organizations, and the media to work together to promote sports.
Addressing the media's influence, she noted, "Journalists not only report the news but also show the path to society. By highlighting talented players hidden in remote areas and sharing their success stories, the media can play a crucial role in creating the stars of tomorrow."
Tournament president Shahriyar Naim and general secretary Misbah Uddin also spoke at the event, noting that the tournament was organized to strengthen harmony, healthy competition, and mutual bonds among journalists.
