Hilsa fishing ban from midnight
Staff Correspondent
The government goes to impose a 22-day ban on hilsa fishing from midnight on Saturday (October 12) to November 3.
Hilsa catching, selling and transportation will remain prohibited during the period to ensure the safe spawning of the national fish of Bangladesh during its peak breeding period.
The objective of the restrictions on fishing is to protect the mother hilsa which lay eggs during the period.
During the ban, fishermen will not be allowed to fish in the 100 kilometre stretch of the Meghna River, from Shatnol to Char Alexander, passing through Raipur in Laxmipur.
If anyone catch and sell hilsa fish during this time, he will be punished with a maximum of two years rigorous imprisonment or a fine of up to Tk 5,000.
As the ban approaches, thousands of fishermen along the Padma and Meghna Rivers are preparing to pull their boats ashore. Concerned about how they will support their families during this period, the fishermen have appealed for both food and financial assistance from the government.
