High Court acquits Mahmudur Rahman in tax return case

Court Correspondent

The High Court today acquitted Mahmudur Rahman, editor of the Amar Desh, from a conviction order over not submitting his income tax return on time.

A single-member bench of Justice Sahidul Karim in a judgment today acquitted Mahmudur Rahman from a three-year imprisonment awarded by a lower court for not submitting his income tax return in 2010.

Advocates Parvez Hossain, Omar Faruk and Bani Adam moved for Mahmudur Rahman while Deputy Attorney General Shahin Ahmed stood for the state.

According to the case, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on April 19 in 2010 served a notice to Mahmudur Rahman for submitting his and his family members’ wealth statement. The ACC in its notice asked the former chairman of the Board of Investment and former adviser to the energy and mineral resources ministry Mahmudur Rahman to submit the statement of the moveable and immoveable assets and liabilities, cash and properties of his and his family members.

The then Deputy Director of the ACC Nur Ahmed later filed a case against Mahmudur Rahman with Gulshan Thana as he failed to submit the reports in time.

The Judge of the Special Judge Court of Dhaka-3 Abu Ahmed Jomadar in a judgment later awarded three years imprisonment and fined Taka one lakh to Mahmudur Rahman. In default, he would have to suffer another one month imprisonment for the same.

Later, Mahmudur Rahman in 2015 filed an appeal with the High Court against the lower court judgment.
