Govt appeals against acquittal of Tarique, others in 21 Aug grenade attack case

Court Correspondent

The interim government has filed an appeal challenging the acquittal of all accused, including BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, in the 21 August grenade attack case, the Attorney General’s Office said Wednesday.

On 1 December last year, the High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain acquitted the accused on the grounds the trial court verdicts were “illegal”.

On 10 October 2018, a Dhaka court pronounced the death sentence for 19 mostly BNP activists, including former home minister Lutfuzzaman Babar, and sentenced 19 others, including Tarique Rahman, to life in prison.

On 21 August 2004, during the BNP’s second stint in government, a series of gruesome grenade attacks left 300 injured and 24 others dead at the Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital. The dead included a number of Awami League leaders including Ivy Rahman and barely spared then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina.
