Freedom celebrated: Dhaka crowds reclaim PM’s office

Staff Correspondent

The Prime Minister’s Office and Ganabhaban, the two most secure buildings in the state, serve as the residence of the head of government and the working place of the prime minister, respectively.

Following former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, these buildings transformed into public spaces.

On Monday afternoon, cheering crowds occupied the Ganabhaban and the prime minister’s office, turning the areas inside the fences into scenes reminiscent of an ordinary park. Students flooded in, enjoying free access.

As the news of the prime minister’s departure spread, eager crowds from various parts of Dhaka headed to Ganabhaban and the Prime Minister’s office. Thousands of people, including professionals, students, and parents, gathered, celebrating their newfound freedom.

The security presence, usually tight, was minimal. A few SSF members were seen, but they did not obstruct the public. The atmosphere inside the four walls was vibrant, with people climbing trees to pick fruits and relaxing on the modern furniture.

Some revellers even ventured onto the office roof, intoxicated by the joy of the moment. Protesters stood guard at the main gate to prevent looting, although initially, some crowd members took their favourite items. Outside, many were seen carrying away various expensive items, including clothes, furniture, and electronics. The public began to feel a sense of freedom and independence.

In the park in front of the office, friends conversed, enjoying their newfound liberty, knowing this opportunity might never come again. Elderly individuals and professionals who had travelled from villages to join the movement were also present, capturing the moment with photos and videos and sharing their experiences with loved ones via video calls. They proudly declared, “We have taken possession of our house; the prime minister has left.”

The scene at Ganabhaban and Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban or National Parliament Building was similar, with tight security but filled with eager people. The jubilant crowd explored the public house and parliament, revelling in the historic moment.
