Former Mayor of Lohagara Municipality in sent to jail

The former mayor of Lohagara Municipality in Narail, Ashraful Alam, has been sent to jail after his bail plea was rejected in a case filed over an attack on a protest rally organized by the anti-discrimination student movement.

 Judge Ratna Saha of the Lohagara Amli Court rejected his bail and ordered that he be sent to prison. The matter was confirmed by Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Adv  Azizul Islam at 11:30 am on Wednesday. 

Ashraful Alam, in addition to being the former mayor of Lohagara Municipality, previously served as the president of the Lohagara Upazila Chhatra League, is currently the vice-president of the Lohagara Upazila Awami League, and also served as the president of the Upazila Jubo League.

According to reports, following the attack on the anti-discrimination student movement in Lohagara upazila, a case was filed by Kazi Yajur Rahman Babu, the chief organizer of the Narail district unit of the movement. The case, filed at Lohagara Police Station on Monday night (9 December of the previous year), named 295 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations, along with 300–350 unidentified individuals. Ashraful Alam was listed as the 19th accused in the case.

According to the case statement, on the morning of 4 August of the previous year, during an anti-discrimination student-people’s rally at the C&B intersection, the rally was violently attacked. Protesters were severely beaten, gunshots were reportedly fired, and crude bombs were detonated. The FIR alleges that 14 people, including Kazi Yajur Rahman, were injured with machetes, bamboo sticks, and iron rods during the attack.
