Extortion, land grabbing, terrorism : List of controversial BNP leaders, activists being prepared
Staff Correspondent
In a decisive push to uphold organizational discipline and preserve the image of both the administration and the party, Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman has initiated a sweeping crackdown against party leaders and activists involved in extortion, land grabbing, terrorism, and other irregularities.
The party command has made it unequivocally clear that official designations, ministerial positions, or political credentials will offer no immunity for unlawful activities. Institutional actions have already been enforced against several prominent leaders, while several MPs, ministers, and local figures remain under strict surveillance. Party insiders affirmed that no one will be spared if allegations are substantiated.
This stringent stance follows a series of swift actions, including the dissolution of the Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP executive committee, alongside its affiliate bodies—the North Youth Wing (Jubo Dal) and West Student Wing (Chhatra Dal)—on Wednesday night.
The organizational cleanup unfolded rapidly when reserved seat Member of Parliament Ferdousi Ahmed Misti tendered her resignation from parliament following directives from the party high command. The decision came in the backdrop of her alleged involvement in an attack, vandalism, and looting incident at the Radda MCH Centre in Mirpur, Dhaka.
Sources confirm that Chairman Tarique Rahman took personal note of the matter upon returning from the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session on September 27. Following a comprehensive review of the incident, organizational actions were executed within three days.
According to party and government sources, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the BNP central office are actively compiling a comprehensive directory of controversial figures across the country who are accused of exploiting party influence for illicit gains, extortion, and localized land disputes.
Speaking on the party’s uncompromising posture, BNP Standing Committee Member Selima Rahman said , "BNP practices politics for the country and its people. Indiscipline will draw zero tolerance. A section of overly ambitious leaders breached organizational discipline, and they are being held accountable. Chairman Tarique Rahman has taken an exceptionally firm stance—offenders will be dealt with severely regardless of their identity."
Concurrently, Mahdi Amin, Advisor and Spokesperson to the Prime Minister’s Office, reaffirmed during a press briefing that legal and organizational accountability remains absolute, irrespective of the perpetrator's political background.
Adding further perspective, BNP Chairman’s Advisor Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal highlighted that recent law enforcement interventions demonstrate a uniform application of the law. He noted that swift action was taken in high-profile incidents, reinforcing the administration’s directive that power or influence will not shelter anyone breaking the law.
The current crackdown builds upon a broader organizational restructuring program. Party records indicate that over 1,000 leaders and activists across the main party and its associate wings have faced disciplinary measures—including expulsions, suspensions, and show-cause notices—since the formation of the current government.
With upcoming local government elections on the horizon following decisions made during the party’s Standing Committee meeting in July, the BNP leadership views these enforcement measures as essential to streamlining grassroots units, purging controversial elements, and reinforcing public trust across the nation.
