Don’t get excited over wage board, Munnujan to RMG makers

Staff Correspondent

State Minister for Labour and Employment Munnujan Sufian has urged the country’s Readymade Garment (RMG) workers not to be confused regarding their minimum salaries to be fixed in the new wage board.

“We have not fixed salaries for garment workers till now but a section of people is spreading rumours over fixing the minimum wage at Tk 10,400. Don’t pay heed to the misleading information,” said the junior minister.

While talking to reporters at her secretariate office in Dhaka over the prevailing unrest of the RMG workers in Gazipur area, she said a political party is fueling the garment workers by spreading lies.

She said a wage board for RGM workers was formed in December 2018 and the duration of the board will end on November 30, this year.

Meanwhile, the ministry held a meeting with the representatives of RMG owners and workers to form a wage board for the next five years, she said.

During the meeting, the owners placed a proposal of fixing the monthly wage for their workers at Tk 10,400 while the workers’ leaders proposed Tk 20,393, said the minister.

Now the workers are in dilemma whether Tk 10,400 has been fixed as their minimum monthly salary, she said.

“There is still one month left for forming the new wage board. We will hold a meeting on November 1, in this regard. I am calling upon you (workers) to return to your respective factories without keeping your feet in anyone's trap,” Munnujan said.

The government will set the new wage at a rate higher than what the owners have proposed, the minister assured the agitating RGM workers.
