Dhaka North and South City Corporation launch country's first climate action plan

Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation have announced Climate Action Plan for the first time in the country. This action plan was announced in a function at Dhaka University Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building on Sunday.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Affairs Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury MP, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ASM Maksud Kamal, Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation. Atiqul Islam, South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas, British High Commission Deputy High Commissioner Matt Cannell, 'C40 City' Executive Director Mark Watts and Dhaka University Geography and Environment Department Emeritus Professor Nazrul Islam spoke.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Affairs Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury called on the Ministry, City Corporation and local public representatives to work together in implementing the climate action plan.

Emphasizing on the implementation of this action plan by involving all ministries, development partners and common people, he said, only then will the desired success come. He mentioned that the urban forestry project will be started again to make Dhaka a livable city.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ASM Maksud Kamal called on developed countries to provide financial assistance to developing countries like Bangladesh to combat the adverse effects of global climate change. He said that the developed countries of the world are mainly responsible for carbon emissions. But developing countries like Bangladesh are affected.

Therefore, developed countries have a huge responsibility to combat the adverse effects of climate change and protect public health.

They have to fulfill that responsibility with financial support. He urged everyone to raise their voices everywhere to build a pollution-free and safe world. The vice-chancellor said that due to the global climate change, the accurate picture of the natural disasters and damage caused in Bangladesh and related data should be presented to the world court through research. He thanked Dhaka North and South City Corporation for formulating a timely climate action plan.

Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Atiqul Islam said, according to the climate action plan, Dhaka has set a target of reducing carbon emissions by 14.9% by 2030, 33.8% by 2040 and 70.6% by 2050. He wants the cooperation of all concerned including the city dwellers to achieve this target.

Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas called on everyone to work unitedly in the implementation of climate action plan and said that the budget allocation will be increased to implement this plan.
