The Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized a massive consignment of banned polythene bags worth approximately Tk 4.08 crore during a special operation in the capital's Lalbagh area on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, media officer of the Coast Guard said this in a press release on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Coast Guard, acting on a tip-off, an operational team from Coast Guard Station Pagla conducted a raid near the Iron Bridge adjacent to the Buriganga River under Lalbagh Police Station between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM on Tuesday. During the sweep, authorities intercepted a suspicious truck and recovered 24,000 kilograms (24 metric tons) of banned polythene bags.

The seized polythene was subsequently handed over to the Department of Environment in Narayanganj for destruction. However, the truck, along with its driver and helper, was released after obtaining written bonds (muchorko).

The Coast Guard media officer reiterated that such operations to protect the environment and curb illegal activities will continue in the future.
