Coast Guard detained 40, seized 6 dredgers in drive against illegal sand mining in Bhola

 In a major drive against illegal sand extraction, Bangladesh Coast Guard personnel detained 40 people and seized six dredgers along with a bulkhead from the Meghna River in Bhola today.

Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said this in a press release  on Monday night.

Acting on a secret tip-off, a specialized team from Coast Guard Base Bhola conducted a 14-hour operation from 1:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Monday in the Meghna River near Gazipur Char under Kalupur Union in Bhola Sadar Police Station. During the drive, officers intercepted the illegal sand mining operation, seizing six dredgers, one bulkhead, and Tk 6,17,100 in cash, while detaining 40 individuals on site.

Following the raid, an Executive Magistrate from the Bhola District Administration conducted a mobile court at the scene, sentencing 38 of the detainees to 15 days of non-rigorous imprisonment. Two minors among the group were released after signing written undertakings.

Legal proceddings for the seized cash was deposited directly into the state treasury, while legal proceedings regarding the confiscated dredgers and bulkhead have been taken.
