Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Sadeka Halim said that to maintain environmental balance, carbon emissions must be reduced. The Honourable Prime Minister has undertaken many groundbreaking initiatives for this purpose. However, the practice of planting trees at the local level has not yet developed. Children must be encouraged to plant trees.

She made these remarks on Wednesday at the end of a rally organised by the Department of Geography and Environment on the occasion of World Environment Day.

The Vice-Chancellor further stated, "After independence, our tree cover was about 25 percent, which has now decreased to 9 percent. We need to incorporate the importance of trees into the curriculum from the school level and encourage children by making them understand their significance."

During the rally, the university's treasurer, Professor Dr. Md. Humayun Kabir Chowdhury, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, the proctor, Professor Dr. Jahangir Hussain, and teachers and students from the Department of Geography and Environment participated. After the rally, students planted saplings in the courtyard of the university's Science Building.
