BSCPLC responds to mislead campaign on international bandwidth provison

Staff Correspondent

Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCPLC), a state-owned enterprise under the Department of Posts and Telecommunications and listed on the stock market, has been performing its duties as the main government organization for international telecommunication connectivity of the country for a long time with efficiency and reputation. Currently, the company operates two Trusted Submarine Cable Systems — SEA-ME-WE-4 and SEA-ME-WE-5 Ma naging successfully.Currently, the combined capacity of these two cable systems is about 7,200 Gbps. Of this, about 4,100 Gbps of bandwidth is already being provided in the country and BSCPLC has the capacity to provide another 3,100 Gbps of bandwidth. This capacity will be further increased in the future through technological development. Recently, some media outlets have published misleading reports about the submarine cable system , geopolitical risks, and potential bandwidth shortages without consulting BSCPLC , which the company said is inconsistent with reality.  According to BSCPLC , out of the total 7,200 Gbps capacity, only 100 Gbps reaches the Red Sea , whi ch is only 1.34 percent of the total capacity. In addition, there is no existing cable connection through the Strait of Hormuz. Of the remaining 7,100 Gbps, 6,000 Gbps is in Singapore and 1,100 Gbps in Chennai , which are not dependent on the Strait of Hormuz or Bab al-Mandeb. As a result , the company has claimed that the campaign that ' Bangladesh could fall into digital darkness due to an attack by the Houthi rebels or Iran' is baseless. At the same time, some media outlets are reporting SEA-ME-WE-5 The information that has been published that the cable has reached its end of capacity has also been reported to be incorrect. Currently, the Lit-up Capacity of this cable is 2 1,200 Gbps , of which 1,488 Gbps is being used. That is, there is still 712 Gbps of unused capacity. The cable's lifespan is set to 2037 and it can be further extended by discussing with the consortium as needed. On the other hand, BSCPLC has also said that unnecessary panic is being spread by presenting SEA-ME-WE-4 as an 'old cable at the end of its life'. Currently, the capacity of this cable is 4,650 Gbps and about 2,595 Gbps bandwidth is being provided through it. Its lifespan is set by the consortium until 2030 and there is an opportunity to extend it further.  Considering the future needs of the country, BSCPLC has already launched another Trusted Submarine Cable System — SEA-ME-WE-6 is being implemented. When this cable is launched in early 2027, the capacity to provide a total of 30,000 Gbps of bandwidth will be achieved on the Cox's Bazar-Singapore and Cox's Bazar-Mumbai ends, with a capacity of about 15,000 Gbps. As a result, the total capacity of the state submarine cables will stand at about 38,000 Gbps by 2027.  BSCPLC said that the company is fully prepared to meet the current and future bandwidth needs of the country. The company also assured that there is no risk of any shortage in international bandwidth supply, either now or in the future. At the same time, BSCPLC has urged all operators , service providers and conscious citizens of the country not to be influenced by misleading reports. The company is committed to providing the country's safe , reliable and sovereign Trusted Submarine Cable System — SEA-ME-WE-4, SEA-ME-WE-5 And SEA-ME-WE-6 It called on all to participate in the country's digital progress by accepting bandwidth from the company. The company also reiterated its commitment to the security of the national information infrastructure and protecting digital sovereignty.
