BGB member dies mysteriously at midnight on border

The bullet-riddled body of a Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) member has been recovered from a camp in the border area of Phulbari upazila of Kurigram. The incident has created a sensation in the border area.
The body of a slain BGB member was recovered from the Gangarhat BOP camp under the 15th BGB Battalion in Lalmonirhat at around 1:30 am on Thursday night. The deceased has been identified as Nasim Uddin (23). He is the son of Babul Mandal of Khajura village in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila.
According to BGB and police sources, on the night of the incident, Nasim Uddin wore the uniform assigned to him for border patrol and took up arms. Later, he took up position inside the boundary on the eastern side of the camp barracks. After a while, a gunshot was suddenly heard.
Hearing the gunshots, colleagues on duty quickly reached the spot and found Nasim lying on the ground in a bloody state. He was immediately rescued and taken to the Phulbari Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
On Friday morning, Phulbari Police Station sent the body to the Kurigram Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Local residents said that the Gangarhat BGB camp is located in a sensitive border area adjacent to the road. There is a camp of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) near the camp. Although people in the vicinity woke up to the sound of gunfire late at night, the BGB members did not allow anyone to enter the camp due to security reasons. Later, it was learned that a BGB member was shot.
Lalmonirhat 15 BGB Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam confirmed the incident and said,
The deceased soldier, Nasim, was unmarried. It was initially reported that he was suffering from some family problems. However, he did not share any details about these matters with his colleagues.
Nasim died of a gunshot wound to the chest. Initially, the incident is believed to be a suicide. However, the BGB's intelligence department is seriously investigating to confirm the real cause of death. If any other information or reason is found during the investigation, necessary action will be taken accordingly.
He said the family of the deceased soldier has been informed about the matter. After the autopsy, the body will be handed over to the BGB and the formalities will be completed and the body will be handed over to the family.
Mahmudul Hasan Naeem, OC of Phulbari Police Station, said, initially, the incident appears to be a suicide. A case of accidental death has been filed at the police station. The exact cause of death can be confirmed after receiving the autopsy report.
The incident has brought the issue of border security and internal psychological pressure within the force into fresh discussion.
