An awareness program was conducted in Chandpur on Thursday by the Bangladesh Coast Guard to protest national fish Hilsa.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haque provided this information through a press release.
According to the press release, since its inception, the Bangladesh Coast Guard has been playing a vital role in ensuring the security of the country’s vast sea, coastal, and riverine areas. In order to protect Bangladesh's fishery resources, the Coast Guard has been continuously conducting operations against jatka (juvenile hilsa) killing, conserving mother hilsa, and enforcing strict surveillance during the fishing ban period in the sea, as well as operating against illegal nets and artisanal trawling boats. As a result, the Meghna River has seen an abundance of hilsa.
On the occasion of the hilsa fish breeding season, to protect "mother hilsa," from October 4, 2025, to November 25, 2025, for a total of 22 days, catching, transporting, storing, marketing, and buying-selling of hilsa across the country will be prohibited as per the Fish Protection and Conservation Act-1950.
On this occasion, from 12 PM to 5 PM on Thursday, Coast Guard Station Chandpur conducted awareness activities including leaflet distribution, miking, and various campaigns to inform local people, fishermen, and fish traders in the riverine areas of Chandpur about the importance of conserving mother hilsa and the relevant laws. The awareness meeting was attended by the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, District Fisheries Officer, Assistant Commissioner (Land), and other officials and members.
To protect fishery resources, the Coast Guard will continue such awareness activities in the future.
