Army detained 3, seized TCB rice in Madan

The Bangladesh Army has detained three individuals and seized 25 sacks of rice belonging to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) during a smuggling attempt in Madan Upazila of Netrakona.
The arrests were made during a raid on Friday night near the M.A. Wahed brick kiln in Akhashri village of the Nayekpur Union.
The detainees have been identified as Shamsul Haque Champion, the TCB dealer operator; driver Alam Miah; and Mahfuz. All three are residents of the Changao Union in the upazila.
Following their detention, the army handed over the seized rice, a pickup truck, and the three individuals to the police. However, on the way to the police station, TCB dealer Shamsul Haque Champion managed to escape, reportedly due to police negligence.
Madan Police Station’s OC Nayeem Mohammad Nahid Hasan confirmed the incident, stating, “Three individuals were handed over to the police from the scene. However, Shamsul Haque Champion escaped while being brought to the station. Efforts are underway to apprehend him.”
According to local and police sources, the TCB rice was sold on the black market from the Nayekpur Union Parishad on Friday evening. Subsequently, locals, suspecting foul play, intercepted a pickup truck carrying 25 sacks of rice in Akhashri village. Upon receiving the information, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer and an army team arrived at the scene and confirmed that TCB goods were being smuggled.
The army later handed over the suspects and their vehicle to the police at the Madan Police Station. In connection with the incident, Krishna Chandra Sarkar, the secretary of the Nayekpur Union Parishad, has filed a written complaint with the police.
Meanwhile, locals allege a nexus between influential public representatives, concerned officials, and the black market syndicate, which they claim is the reason for the frequent occurrence of such irregularities. Questions are also being raised among residents as to whether the accused truly escaped or was secretly released.
