AL leader Mrinal had no bank account before electing MP, now his family has huge assets

Munshiganj Correspondent

Mrinal Kanti Das, a former Member of Parliament from Munshiganj-3 Constituency and Awami League's Liberation War Affairs Secretary had no bank account before becoming an MP in 2014.

However, he and his wife built a mountain of wealth in 10 years as an MP. The couple has crores of taka in the bank along with lakhs of taka of land, houses and savings certificates.

Apart from this, he has been accused of laundering huge amount of money to India. This Awami League leader fled to India two days before the student uprising on August 5. After this, many questions have been raised about his wealth.

As an Awami League candidate, Mrinal Kanti became MP from Munshiganj-3 constituency in 2014 unopposed and in 2018, which was accused of rigging. In the twelfth national election, he lost the vote even though he was an independent candidate without getting the party's nomination.

An analysis of his affidavit submitted to the Election Commission shows that Mrinal Kanti did not own a car before the 2014 elections. But after becoming an MP, he bought a car worth crores of rupees. In 2018, Mrinal Kanti showed 1 crore 16 lakh 54 thousand 891 taka in his own account and 14 lakh 78 thousand taka in his wife's account in 2023.

Apart from this, he has a flat of Tk 18 lakh in Dhanmondi of the capital and a 7.5 katha plot in Purbachal worth Tk 20 lakh 44 thousand. In the name of his wife, there is a building on a 10.5 katha plot worth Tk 12 lakh 50 thousand in Mohammadpur of the capital. Apart from this, in 2023, he gave the information of 90 lakh 24 thousand 191 rupees in the name of his wife.

Local Awami League leaders and activists complained that Mrinal Kanti earned Deda's money after becoming an MP. A large part of it is smuggled to India.

Apart from this, he has patronized BNP and Jamaat leaders day after day to spread influence in the local Awami League. Because of this, after the fall of the government on August 5, district Awami League president Mohammad Mohiuddin, former MP Faisal Biplab and many other leaders' houses and businesses were looted and set on fire, but nothing happened to Mrinal Kanti. His house and business establishment in Munshiganj city are still intact due to the obstruction of BNP-Jamaat activists.
