After being deprived of promotion for a long time due to administrative complications, 69 teachers of Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) have finally been promoted from the position of Lecturer to Assistant Professor. This long-awaited decision was taken in the 65th Regent Board meeting of the university.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Mohammad Ismail, handed over the promotion letters to the promoted teachers on Tuesday
The number of promoted teachers from various departments are as follows: FTNS(7), EEE(3), FIMS(2), English(4), ESDM(4), ICE(3), BGE(4), Economics(5), Pharmacy(5), Applied Math(5), Agriculture(2), Political Science(3), IIT(5), Oceanography(4), Bangla(1), THM(3), Law(1), Sociology(1), Microbiology(4), Statistics(2), and Chemistry(1).
It is learnt that in the 146th meeting of UGC held in 2017, a unified policy regarding teacher recruitment and promotion in public universities was adopted. Later in 2019, under the chairmanship of the Education Minister, this unified policy formulated with the participation of UGC representatives was approved in principle by the Ministry.
According to this unified policy, to be promoted to the position of Assistant Professor in the university, the candidate must have not only teaching qualifications but also three years of active teaching experience. Previously, a Lecturer could be promoted to Assistant Professor with only two years of experience.
According to the Registrar’s Office of NSTU, this complication mainly arose during the tenure of former Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Mohammad Didarul Alam. Although he initially opposed the adoption of this policy based on the teachers' demands, he later changed his position after going to the Ministry. Due to the inconsistency of the decision dates, the teachers were ultimately deprived of their promotion.
Regarding this, Acting Registrar Md. Tamjid Hossain Chowdhury said that the promotion of 84 teachers had been stalled for a long time due to the complications of the policy.
Despite the long delay, the promoted teachers are overjoyed. Expressing gratitude to the current administration, Assistant Professor Md. Golam Kibria of the Economics Department said, “After a long wait, we have received our deserved promotion by overcoming administrative complications. This process has been completed due to the goodwill and effective initiatives of the Regent Board. We express our sincere gratitude to the Regent Board. They played a crucial role in ensuring our rights by maintaining regular communication with the University Grants Commission (UGC).”
Assistant Professor Sajib Ahmed of the ESDM Department said, “We got the promotion after almost one and a half years. During this long time, our promotion was stuck due to various complications. We thank the current administration for considering the matter seriously and resolving it.
In this regard, Vice-Chancellor of NSTU, Prof Dr. Mohammad Ismail, conveyed his best wishes to the promoted teachers and wished them success in their future endeavors.
