A court in Sunamganj on Saturday sent three women to jail after local residents caught them red-handed with seven kilograms of marijuana and over BDT 2 lakh in cash at a border village in Tahirpur upazila.

The arrested individuals were identified as Juleha Khatun, wife of Rais Uddin, and Sokhina Khatun, wife of Jamat Ali, both residents of Mokshedpur North (Monaipara) village under Badaghat union of the upazila. The third associate was identified as Shamsunnahar Begum, wife of Ohab Miah, hailing from the neighboring Puran Lauor East Para area.

According to local sources, the definitions of community vigilance were put to display on Friday night when residents of the Puran Lauor area and members of a local youth organization, As-Sunnah Jubo Samaj Kalyan Parishad, suspected illicit activities at Juleha Khatun's residence. They conducted a sudden watch and discovered seven kilograms of marijuana neatly packed inside a travel bag in her bedroom, along with BDT 210,050 in cash earned from the sale of narcotics. The locals subsequently confined the three women and alerted the authorities.

Tahirpur Police Station SI Mohammad Ali confirmed the details on Saturday afternoon, stating that a police team rushed to the spot on Friday night immediately after receiving the information. The law enforcers took the three female suspects into custody and officially seized the drugs and the cash.

Following the formal arrest, a case was registered with Tahirpur Police Station against the trio under the Narcotics Control Act, detailing the seizure of the contraband and the illicit funds. The police forwarded the accused to a Sunamganj court on Saturday afternoon, where the presiding judge ordered them to be sent to jail, the SI added.
