25 maunds piranha fish seized , owner fined in Gobindaganj

About 25 maunds of banned piranha fish have been seized from a pond in Gobindaganj, Gaibandha. 
 
At this time, the pond owner Ayub Ali was fined Tk 5,000 through a mobile court.These fish were seized by casting nets in a pond in the Phulpukuria area of Gumaniganj Union of the upazila from 11 am to 5:30 pm onSaturday.
Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Asaduzzaman conducted the mobile court. Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mizanur Rahman and Gobindaganj Police Station OC  Bulbul Islam were present at the time.According to police and local sources, fish farmer Ayub Ali, a resident of Phulpukuria village, has been cultivating banned piranha fish in his pond for a long time. Based on this secret information, about 25 maunds of fish were lifted by casting a net in Ayub Ali's pond on Saturday morning and seized.
It is learnt  that piranha fish is sold for 150 taka per kilogram in the local market. Accordingly, the price of 25 maunds of fish stands at 1 lakh 50 thousand taka. These seized piranha fish have been distributed to various orphanages and Hafiziya Madrasas in the upazila. Gobindaganj Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mizanur Rahman said that piranha fish are of a monstrous nature. This fish is harmful to other native fish. This fish eats native fish. Therefore, these fish are lifted from the pond and distributed. There is no harm in eating such fish by humans. However, it is prohibited to cultivate it in the country.
