Bangladesh Coast Guard has detained 18 fishermen along with an illegal artisanal trawling boat from Moheshkhali's Matarbari on Thursday noon.
Media Officer of Coast Guard East Zone, Lt. BN Shakib Mehboob informed this in a press release.
The press release stated that this operation was conducted as part of regular patrol activities to protect fish resources. Legal action has been taken against the detainees.
The Coast Guard reported that the ship deployed for Operation Suraksha stationed along the sea coast began a special operation on Saturday morning.
A swift search was conducted upon noticing suspicious activities in the sea area adjacent to Matarbari. This led to the capture of an illegal artisanal trawling boat and the 18 fishermen inside it. The boat was immediately seized and the fishermen were arrested.
The Coast Guard further stated that action will be taken against the arrested fishermen according to existing laws.
Officials noted that such illegal trawling not only threatens the country's marine resources but also puts the livelihoods of legitimate fishermen at risk. Therefore, regular operations are being conducted to prevent illegal fishing through a joint initiative of the Navy and Coast Guard, and this will continue in the future.
