Commentary: BNP leaders, activists must realize PM Tarique Rahman's message

By Hemayet Hossain

Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman’s recent actions against party wrongdoers mark a necessary intervention in Bangladesh's political landscape.

By refusing to shield those involved in extortion, land grabbing, and vandalism—and by enforcing swift accountability—the party leadership has signaled that proximity to power will no longer serve as a blanket immunity card.
For far too long, national politics has been burdened by the aftermath of political transitions, where local party cadres often rush to assert dominance through illegal land acquisitions and physical coercion.

Recent incidents in the capital ranging from the attempt to grab land at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur and the property dispute at the UCC intersection to the vandalism of content creator Salman Muqtadir’s studio and illegal land occupations in Mohammadpur threatened to severely undermine public trust in the new administration.

The top leadership's visible indignation at these events reflects an acute awareness of this vulnerability.

In response, a comprehensive list of controversial figures is being compiled jointly by the Prime Minister’s Office and the central BNP office, with both organizational disciplinary measures and legal actions already underway.

What distinguishes the current response is the speed and severity of the structural actions taken:

The forced resignation of Reserve Seat MP Ferdousi Ahmed Misti over her alleged connection to the Radda Centre incident sets a critical precedent that legislative status offers no protection against misconduct.

A total of 14 leaders across the BNP and its affiliate wings—including Khalil Chowdhury of Shah Ali Thana BNP, Anwar Hossain of C-Block Unit, Hafizur Rahman Shukku of Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP, alongside 5 Chhatra Dal, 2 Swechchhasebak Dal, and 4 Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal leaders—have been expelled. This follows the earlier expulsion of Mofizur Rahman Mamun, president of Ward No. 91 BNP.

Key bodies plagued by expired tenures and breaches of discipline—including the 51-member Dhaka Metropolitan North Jubo Dal committee led by Aminul Islam (Currently State Minister for Youth and Sports) and Mostafa Zaman, as well as the Metropolitan West Chhatra Dal unit—were promptly dissolved to halt systemic decay.

Law enforcement has stepped in directly, as demonstrated by the arrest of Nur Alam, former joint general secretary of Shah Ali Thana Jubo Dal, in Darus Salam for his involvement in the attack, vandalism, and looting at the Radda Centre.

Simultaneously, the administration's resolve is being tested across the wider political spectrum.

At a rally in Feni on Thursday, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman cautioned the main opposition party, Jamaat-e-Islami, to "clean your own house before pointing fingers at others," while warning against political conspiracies.

Meanwhile, the arrest of Jamaat leader Major (Retd) Akhtaruzzaman over an incident at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport—and Jamaat's threat of a street movement if he is not released—underlines the delicate balance of public order the government must maintain.

For BNP activists from the grassroots to the central leadership, the message from the Prime Minister is unvarnished: holding power is no longer an opportunity for personal enrichment or lawlessness.

Party discipline, public image, and government integrity remain paramount, and failure to heed this warning carries clear consequences resignation, expulsion, and imprisonment.

These recent moves led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman have been praised by the elite and common people alike.

They expect these actions to continue in the best interest of the country and its citizens.

The leaders and activists of the ruling BNP must realize the reality of current politics and truly internalize the message of the Prime Minister.
