Women's group forms human chain in Satkhira demanding abolition of entire commission, including proposal to recognize sex workers as workers

Satkhira Correspondent

Speakers at the human chain organized by the conscious women's society in Satkhira said that the proposals submitted by the Women's Affairs Reform Commission that directly conflict with the provisions of the Quran must be immediately rejected. This reform proposal of the Women's Commission proves that it is a document to implement the agenda of a special group in favor of fallen fascism and dictatorship! Therefore, not only should this proposal be rejected, but the entire 'Women's Affairs Reform Commission' must be abolished.

The speakers strongly demanded the formation of an inclusive committee with experts and religious scholars of all levels and the formulation of women's reform policies based on fairness.

The speakers also said that several of the commission's recommendations will create a dialectical position of the state with the social and religious values of Bangladesh. This controversial report has brought "society vs. state" and "religion vs. women" face to face. Religion has been presented as one of the reasons for discrimination against women in every page of the commission's proposed report. Stating that all the conscious women's communities in the country have rejected this proposed recommendation with hatred, the speakers strongly demanded the cancellation of this proposal as well as the cancellation of the entire commission.

Speakers made this demand at a human chain program held in front of the Satkhira Deputy Commissioner's office on Wednesday  at 11 am demanding the cancellation of the controversial and self-contradictory recommendations of the anti-constitutional Women's Commission.

Chaired by Gulshanara Kamini, convener of the Satkhira Women's Society, and led by member secretary Fazila Khatun, speeches were delivered by former vice chairman of Kaliganj Upazila Parishad and women leaders Zainab Parvin, Nurunnesa Iti, Razia Sultana, Fatema Khatun, Rabeya Khatun, and others.

The speakers also said that after reading this reform report of more than 300 pages containing 433 recommendations in 17 chapters, it seems that they want to mislead the women of this country with the tasty words of women's equality, women's development and women's empowerment. They have made women stand as opponents of men. The proposals of the commission are a far-reaching initiative to push the nation towards the final division. The representation and inclusion of women from all classes of society has not been ensured in this commission.

The speakers said that the 10 proposals submitted by the Women's Affairs Reform Commission directly contradict the provisions of the Quran, and that the Women's Affairs Reform Commission's report proposed the repeal of the Muslim inheritance law. It proposed to reform the Muslim family law and formulate a uniform family law for all religions, where men and women would have supposedly equal rights in marriage, divorce, inheritance and maintenance. A wife will be able to file a rape case against her husband. It has been proposed to recognize sex workers as workers. It has also been proposed to implement these proposals as soon as possible by issuing an ordinance during the term of the interim government. The speakers said, "Our statement is clear that this commission must be abolished in the interests of the country and Islam and in the interests of women. Because this commission stands against the faith of the people of the country. They are trying to create chaos in the family and society." The speakers also said that looking at the activities of the anti-Islamic Women's Commission, it seems that they are targeting the Holy Quran. They are trying to destabilize the country to establish atheism. Therefore, the entire commission should be abolished. Those involved in atheism among them should be brought under proper legal management. The speakers objected to the proposal of the Women's Affairs Reform Commission, citing religious regulations, especially Islamic inheritance and family law, as reasons for discrimination against women, and demanded the abolition of this proposal as well as the abolition of the entire commission..
