Traditional sand extraction in Khasiamara River: Sand dispatched thru' pipes to protect rubber dam

Sunamganj Correspondent

Sand extraction through a dispatch system has begun in the Khasiamara River in Dowarabazar Upazila of Sunamganj, with accumulated sand being removed from the river. According to those concerned, the initiative has been taken in a planned manner to maintain the river’s natural water flow and protect the important rubber dam.

According to local residents, a large amount of sand has accumulated at various points of the Khasiamara River for a long time, causing the riverbed to become filled up. This has obstructed the normal flow of water and raised concerns over the operation and long-term safety of the rubber dam.

Boat worker Tajul Islam said thousands of workers and their families are involved in traditional sand extraction in the Khasiamara River. They have been earning their livelihoods through this work for a long time. Sand is being extracted from the river using traditional methods and loaded onto boats through pipes to protect the rubber dam.

Sand trader Karim Mia said sand extraction from the river has made navigation and their working environment considerably easier. However, he stressed that the river’s natural flow and the safety of the rubber dam must be given priority during sand extraction.

Those concerned said that if sand is extracted and dispatched from designated areas in accordance with the rules, the river’s navigability and natural water flow can be maintained.

Local residents said the planned removal of sand would help restore normal water flow in the river and facilitate water drainage during the monsoon season. If the rubber dam remains operational, it will also help ensure irrigation facilities for agricultural activities.

They expressed hope that the authorities would continue only necessary and controlled dispatch operations to protect the rubber dam and maintain the river’s natural flow, rather than allowing illegal or excessive sand extraction.

Mohammad Harun-Or-Rashid, lessee of the Khasiamara River, said the workers are extracting sand in accordance with the provisions of the Sand and Soil Management Act, 2010. He added that a large number of local workers and their families are closely involved in traditional sand extraction for their livelihoods

Dowarabazar UNO Arup Ratan Singh said all prescribed rules and government directives must be strictly followed in extracting sand from the Khasiamara River. At the same time, the river’s navigability, environment and the safety of the rubber dam must be given the highest priority.

Regarding complaints of excessive noise pollution, the UNO said a team would conduct an on-site investigation through the Land Officer within the next one or two days.
