Roads being swallowed by canals, people of 12 villages at risk in Satkhira

A road in Satkhira is being swallowed by a canal, putting people in 12 villages at risk of travel.
A two-and-a-half-kilometer road from Charbalitha to Bahera in Debhata Upazila, bordering Satkhira, is collapsing and flowing into the Kolkata Canal. Satkhira's Local Government Engineering Department's Senior Assistant Engineer Md. Rajiullah claimed that such a situation has arisen due to the construction of a cross-dam in the canal. He said that LGED officials have visited the affected areas. The Upazila LGED has been asked to take action after looking into the matter.
The length of this upazila road is 12 kilometers. Of which, two and a half kilometers have been eroded. If repairs are not carried out quickly, communication between Satkhira Sadar, Asashuni and Debhata Upazilas may be cut off at any time. In the past, this Kolkata Canal was one of the main means of communication in India's waterways. The LGED road runs along both sides of that Kolkata Canal. Recently, a cross-dam was built at the junction of the canal. As a result, many parts of the upazila road have collapsed and flowed into the canal. And this is about to cut off communication in the entire area, said local retired teacher Niranjan Sarkar. Abdul Majed Gazi of Shashadanga village in Debhata upazila said, "If this road is destroyed, the communication roads of the three upazilas will disappear into the canal." However, LGED authorities say that the canal's course has been blocked. As a result, when the tide comes in, the water rises and the paved roads on both sides are eroded.
Taslima Khatun of Kadamkhali village said, if the road breaks, communication will be cut off and hundreds of houses will be flooded with overflowing water from the canal. Cropland and fish ponds will be washed away. If measures are not taken to protect the road now, a big danger is imminent. It will be impossible to repair it later. The paved road can break at any moment due to the rising tide. The road is a protection for the houses, cropland and fish ponds in the area; if it breaks, at least 12 villages will be submerged.

Satkhira Water Development Board (WDB ) Executive Engineer Md. Salahuddin said, "Such a situation has been created due to the construction of embankments in a horizontal manner. Actions are being taken to resolve the problem. LGEG and PAUBO have been instructed to take action to resolve the problem quickly," said Satkhira Deputy Commissioner Mostaq Ahmed
