Children play in groups amid torrential rain in Ctg

 M R Amin, Chattogram

While the streets of Chattogram turned deserted since morning due to heavy downpour, shops closed and people took shelter inside their homes—on the other side, a chorus of joyful voices rang out from a group of children.

A striking scene unfolded at a playground in the Oxygen-Golbag Residential Area of Chattogram, where a group of children played gleefully in the pouring rain. Some leapt into puddles, some danced, and others floated paper boats down a narrow stream. The roads around them were muddy, their clothes soaked, and the wind chilly—yet their excitement showed no signs of stopping.

According to local residents, children usually stay indoors during such heavy rainfall. But this time was different. These little ones seemed to have embraced the rain instead of fearing it.

One parent said, "I worry when I see them like this—what if they get sick? But at the same time, there's a sense of peace. You just don't see this kind of joy anymore."

Experts believe that children develop emotional resilience when they grow up interacting with nature. While health precautions are necessary, such moments often become priceless memories of childhood.

One child exclaimed, “As soon as it rains, we rush outside to play. It feels like Eid to us!”

Even amidst the heavy downpour and a gloomy environment all around, the laughter of these children pierced through the stillness, as if to remind us—only those who haven't lost their innocence know how to find joy in the simplest things.

Meanwhile, from 6 AM to 9 AM on Wednesday morning, Chattogram recorded 89 millimeters of rain in just three hours, categorizing it as extremely heavy rainfall. As a result, many important areas in the city were submerged under water, causing widespread traffic congestion and disruption.

On June 18, areas like Agrabad, Katalganj, GEC Mor, Kapasgola, and Halishahar experienced waterlogging. Roads in these residential and commercial zones went underwater, hampering movement for both the general public and office-goers. In places like Chawkbazar, Bakalia, Rahattar Pool, and GEC Mor, water supply was also disrupted, further inconveniencing commuters.

According to the Patenga Meteorological Office, Chattogram recorded a total of 108 millimeters of rainfall in the last 24 hours. The current weather pattern is likely to persist for the next few days.
