Prof Dr. Mohsin Uddin removed from syndicate, academic council of BU

Masud Rana, Barisal Bureau

Professor Dr. Md. Mohsin Uddin of the English Department at Barishal University (BU) has been removed from his positions on the Syndicate and Academic Council, citing various allegations against him. However, Dr. Mohsin claims the dismissal is illegal and baseless.

The decision was made official through a notice issued on Sunday  signed by the University Registrar Md. Monirul Islam under the direction of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Sucharita Sharmin.

According to the notice, following the fall of the so-called “fascist government” on August 5 last year, Dr. Mohsin submitted his resignation from both councils on August 11, citing personal reasons. However, since he was the only professor at the time, the Vice-Chancellor reinstated him to the Syndicate and Academic Council on October 7.

The notice further states that on February 14, the VC invited Dr. Mohsin to attend a Syndicate meeting. However, he was absent both physically and virtually. He allegedly rejected the invitation and sent a written refusal via WhatsApp, citing technical limitations in joining the online session. Additionally, it is alleged that during an incident involving some students vandalizing the gate of the VC’s residence-office, Dr. Mohsin was present, which the administration deemed “inappropriate behavior.”

The notice also accuses Dr. Mohsin of holding a press conference on February 17 under the administrative building, where he allegedly made defamatory remarks against the VC. These actions were considered to be a clear violation of university service regulations and damaging to the university’s image.

Moreover, the notice claims that Dr. Mohsin referred to the VC as a collaborator of a “fallen fascist government”—a statement the administration called completely false.

The university further noted that in Dr. Mohsin’s police verification report during his appointment, it was revealed that he and his family are supporters of the Awami League. He also served as the Member Secretary of the committee responsible for establishing the proposed 'Bangabandhu Chair' at Barisal University. Based on these affiliations, the administration claims he himself was a collaborator of the so-called fallen regime.

Considering all these issues, the university administration stated that it has decided to relieve Dr. Mohsin from both the Syndicate and Academic Council.

When contacted, Registrar Md. Monirul Islam said the decision was made under the directive of the Vice-Chancellor and declined to comment further.

In response, Prof. Dr. Mohsin Uddin said, I been removed from the Syndicate and Academic Council illegally and without proper grounds. A Vice-Chancellor cannot unilaterally remove someone from the Syndicate without a decision from the Academic Council. This move is unjust and a violation of established procedures.”
