Presence of Bengali language in AI models needs to increase: DU VC

Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam emphasized on increasing the services and presence of Bengali language in AI models and said that our problems need to be properly accommodated in global AI models to address the challenges of cyclones and drugs in deltaic regions like Bangladesh.
He said this in his presidential address at the closing ceremony of COMPAS 2026 organized by the IEEE Computer Society Bangladesh Chapter and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) of Dhaka University at the Abdul Karim Sahitya Bisharad Auditorium of Bangla Academy on Saturday. .
Secretary of the Information and Communication Technology Department Md. Mamunur Rashid Bhuiyan spoke as the chief guest at the closing ceremony. Chairman of the Computer Science and Engineering Department and COMPAS 2026 General Chair Professor Dr. Md. Abdur Razzak delivered the welcome address. IEEE Computer Society Bangladesh Chapter Chair Professor Dr. Md. Obaidur Rahman delivered the vote of thanks.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam said, "We are living in a time when computing technology is radically changing every field. Artificial Intelligence or AI is leading that change at a very fast pace. AI has crossed the boundaries of the laboratory in just a few years and has become an integral part of our daily lives. Large-scale language models are now drafting, translating and writing code. AI systems are analyzing medical images, predicting crops and helping farmers plan their harvests. In the field of science, AI is also doing important work such as determining the structure of proteins, discovering new materials and reducing the time of research.
